The Lousal Mining Museum has unveiled a captivating new addition to its exhibits: FeS2, a cicerone robot developed by Portuguese robotics company IDMind. Dressed as a miner, FeS2 offers guided tours of the museum, providing visitors with an engaging and interactive experience. This initiative is part of the museum’s recent renovation, which introduced interactive tools and virtual reality elements to enhance the storytelling of Lousal’s mining heritage.
FeS2, named after the chemical formula for pyrite – the mineral historically extracted in Lousal – combines advanced robotics with cultural preservation. The robot navigates autonomously, delivering informative presentations about the museum’s exhibits, including the 19th-century mining models from the Royal Academy of Mines in Freiberg, Germany.
This collaboration between IDMind and the Centro Ciência Viva do Lousal exemplifies how technology can bring history to life, offering visitors a unique blend of education and entertainment.
